In a remote mountain village in Yunnan Province, southwest China, an impressive glass elevator standing 288 meters (945 feet) tall has been built to make it easier for children to attend school. Located in the Nizhu River Grand Canyon, this new elevator recently began operating alongside a 268-meter-tall elevator that opened in 2022.
Previously, without these elevators and cable cars, schoolchildren and their families had to navigate extremely steep and dangerous cliff paths. The journey from the base to the top took approximately three hours, and a round trip required nearly six hours of exhausting travel.
However, students can now transfer through vehicles, elevators, and cable cars in stages, reducing the school commute to just 30 minutes. Locals can use these services for free, and the new elevator, situated among breathtaking cliff scenery, has become a remarkable piece of infrastructure for the region.
