Humanoid robots similar to those in science fiction may soon patrol the U.S.-Mexico border. American-based robotics technology company Foundation has proposed using its robots called Phantom for monitoring the U.S.-Mexico border. This plan has been submitted to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and is currently under active discussion with the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
These robots possess remarkable capabilities. They can easily traverse rough terrain and are proficient at searching for people and mapping surroundings. They are primarily intended for use in areas inaccessible to security watchtowers and drones, as well as dangerous border hotspots. Notably, the Phantom robots have already been successfully tested on the front lines of the Ukraine conflict for logistics support and hazardous operations. A new version capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions is currently being developed.
Currently, the proposal to deploy these robots at the border remains at the suggestion stage, with no formal approval yet. Should formal deployment proceed, the robots would primarily be responsible for surveillance and reporting suspicious activities. However, decisions on apprehension and enforcement actions would remain the responsibility of human officers, who would make final determinations and carry out operations.
