A humanoid robot completed a half marathon in Beijing, China last Sunday in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, breaking the world record set by humans. This demonstrates how rapidly China's robotics technology is advancing. The time significantly surpassed the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds set by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon, Portugal last March.
Nearly 100 robot teams participated in this year's competition, which is approximately 5 times more than last year. The humanoid robots competed using either autonomous navigation systems or remote control systems, with about 40 percent of the participating robots utilizing autonomous driving systems. The competing robots varied in height from 75 centimeters to 180 centimeters and competed on a course spanning over 21 kilometers that included winding paths and elevation changes.
Organizing such robot marathon competitions aims to promote cutting-edge technologies like AI-based humanoid robots for China, which is facing intense technological competition with the United States. Technical teams from Germany, France, and Brazil, including China's renowned Tsinghua University, also participated in the competition. Although some robots stumbled during the earlier stages, experts consider this competition a significant milestone for the technology world.
