Billionaire Bill Gates has invested in a remarkable project to create an "artificial sun" on Earth — funding a nuclear fusion company called Type One Energy. The company applied for a license in January 2026 to build a reactor called Infinity One in Tennessee, USA. This reactor is nothing like conventional nuclear power plants. It mimics the process by which the Sun produces heat and light. Its design uses an advanced technology called a Stellarator, which employs powerful magnetic fields to precisely contain extremely hot plasmas. The most fascinating aspect is that for energy to be released, the plasma must reach temperatures of around 100 million degrees Celsius — far hotter than the Sun's core, which is only about 15 million degrees Celsius. That is a truly mind-boggling temperature. The project, to be built on the site of a former coal-fired power plant, would become Tennessee's first large-scale fusion energy project if approved.
