A promising breakthrough emerges when combining dogs' extraordinary sense of smell with modern artificial intelligence technology to enable early cancer detection. Bangalore-based startup Dognosis, operating in India, is providing dogs with specially designed sensor-embedded caps and analyzing their brain activity and responses through AI technology in detail.
The testing process is remarkably simple for patients. Patients don't need direct contact with dogs—they simply need to wear a nose mask for about 10 minutes and breathe. These nose masks are then examined by laboratory-trained dogs through smell detection. Remarkably, according to studies testing over 1,500 people, the accuracy rate for detecting seven major types of cancer reached over 90 percent.
If this innovative method proves successful, it could become a cost-effective and efficient first-stage screening test for early cancer detection. The Dognosis company aims to commercialize this program next year. While cancer specialists say these findings are very promising, they recommend conducting more extensive trials to confirm accuracy definitively.
