China is considering using robot dogs to work alongside astronauts at future lunar research stations. The Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST) has proposed a project in which scientists would have three astronauts and two four-legged robots working together on the lunar surface.
These robot dogs would be able to assist in patrolling the station, conducting hazard assessments, monitoring the environment, collecting rocks, and performing scientific experiments. In the proposed model, one astronaut would work with the two robot dogs while another focuses on scientific tasks such as collecting samples, and the third would control other robots from a pressurized vehicle.
China is planning to build an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) near the Moon's south polar region, with the basic phase scheduled for completion by 2035 and a more advanced phase by 2040 and beyond. There are also plans to send astronauts to the Moon in 2030. However, the deployment of these robot dogs to the Moon remains in the research proposal stage and has not yet been officially confirmed.
