China has developed a smart power grid protection technology capable of reducing power restoration time to one-tenth of a second (0.1 seconds) after an outage, state media reported. The breakthrough is expected to play a major role in making electricity distribution safer and more stable worldwide. According to a report in Science and Technology Daily published Tuesday, the technology can isolate and repair power line faults — which typically take hours to resolve — within 100 milliseconds (0.1 seconds). It can also detect micro-current faults at the milliamp (100mA) level, a problem that has historically been difficult to address. The technology has been deployed across China and exported to 12 other countries, and is used in sectors including electricity, steel production, and rail transport. It was developed by the China Electric Power Research Institute, a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China. "This achievement provides key technical support for the safe operation of modern power systems, not only guaranteeing reliable electricity supply to cities and the nation, but also advancing the intelligent manufacturing capabilities of electrical equipment," the report stated.
