Doctors at a London hospital successfully used artificial intelligence technology during a brain surgery performed in May 2026 to remove a tumor from a 48-year-old patient and restore their vision.
During the surgery, the AI system analyzed live video directly from the operating room camera and highlighted critical structures such as blood vessels and optic nerves to make them clearly visible to the surgeons. The surgery itself was not performed by AI, but was fully controlled and decided upon by the doctors.
The AI system was trained using thousands of previously recorded surgical videos. After the tumor was successfully removed, the patient's vision improved noticeably, and within just one week, the patient was able to walk independently without the aid of glasses or a cane.
