A cloud seeding trial conducted in Alaska using drones generated an estimated 1.9 billion gallons of rainfall within 3 hours. The experiment was carried out by Rainmaker Technology on August 23, 2026, in the Knik Glacier area of Alaska.
During the trial, autonomous Elijah drones connected seven cloud seeding missions and deployed 19 flares containing silver iodide (374.3 grams). The silver iodide helped transform water droplets within the clouds into ice crystals, which eventually fell as rain.
According to weather radar and computational forecasting models, the cloud seeding operation is estimated to have produced approximately 18.8 billion gallons (71,000 cubic meters) of rainfall. Rainmaker Technology described this as a successful trial and stated that additional tests would be conducted. If this technology can be deployed regularly, it could help improve water availability for regions facing water scarcity challenges.
