Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla companies plan to construct a massive chip manufacturing facility called Terafab in Texas. The first phase of this project will cost over $16.8 billion and span over 100 million square feet, making it potentially the largest building by floor area in the world.
The facility will house advanced chip production, memory manufacturing, and chip packaging processes all in one location. The produced chips will be used in Tesla's Optimus robots, Cybercabs, and other AI systems, as well as SpaceX's space-based AI technologies. Intel is also participating in this project and will provide support in chip design and manufacturing technology.
The project is expected to create over 3,000 jobs and aims to produce chips capable of delivering over 1 terawatt of computing power annually in the long term. The Texas state government has provided $30 million in funding for the project, and the facility will use water from rainwater reservoirs instead of groundwater for operations.
