NASA has shared three breathtaking photographs taken by astronauts using an iPhone 17 Pro Max during the Artemis II mission, which is currently en route to the Moon. NASA announced back in February that the iPhone had passed quality tests for extended use in orbit, and all four crew members were issued their own iPhone 17 Pro Max to capture personal photos and videos during the mission.

The photos show mission commander Reid Wiseman and astronaut Christina Koch gazing back at Earth through the windows of the Orion spacecraft. According to Flickr metadata, the images were shot on day two of the mission -- April 2 -- using the iPhone 17 Pro Max's front camera.

Other cameras being used during the mission include the Nikon D5, Nikon Z 9, and GoPro HERO4 Black, but the iPhone shots have captured the most public interest. Artemis II is NASA's first crewed lunar mission since 1972, and on Monday the astronauts are expected to set a new record for the farthest distance humans have ever travelled from Earth.

The Orion spacecraft does not have the capability to land on the Moon -- it will orbit it and then head back to Earth. The crew is scheduled to splash down safely on April 10.
