NASA scientists are preparing to conduct a new experiment called "Flammability Of Materials On The Moon" to study the combustibility of materials that will be used on the lunar surface.
In this experiment, sample materials will be exposed to a 6-inch flame, and researchers will primarily examine how far the fire spreads, whether burning sections fall downward, and related phenomena.
Scientists believe that experiments conducted on Earth cannot be applied to the Moon. Because the Moon's gravity is significantly lower than Earth's, the shape of the flame can change, and the rate of combustion may become even higher.
Therefore, NASA will conduct actual hands-on burning tests of fuel samples on the Moon's surface and will study the behavior of flames in detail using sensors and cameras.
NASA has previously tested flames inside the Cygnus spacecraft and studied how fire spreads and propagates in low-gravity conditions.
This direct experiment to be conducted on the lunar surface will be able to provide crucial information for fire safety measures in space stations and human habitation bases on the Moon.
