A new AI technology that can reveal heart secrets in just seconds has emerged. Researchers at Imperial College London have developed an AI system that can detect heart failure and cardiac abnormality symptoms in under two seconds using a simple ECG test. The AI can identify even subtle electrical waveform changes that doctors might not notice, providing detailed analysis of these minute variations.
To verify whether the system actually works, it was tested using data from nearly 67,000 patients in America, and the results are quite impressive. It was able to accurately distinguish 81 percent of patients with heart failure and up to 90 percent of patients with cardiac disease. To achieve such performance, the model was trained using over 16 million ECG data points connected to medical records from Brazil and millions of data points from America.
Normally, to confirm these diseases requires expensive and time-consuming heart ultrasounds (Echocardiograms). However, with this AI technology, doctors can immediately identify patients at risk of disease and provide timely treatment. What's particularly interesting is that it can re-examine ECGs that were recorded for other health reasons, making it a powerful tool that could revolutionize the healthcare world by providing early warnings of previously undetected heart diseases.
