Scientists from Stanford University and Arc Institute have successfully created new synthetic viruses in the laboratory using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. These viruses can selectively kill bacteria without posing a threat to humans. The researchers developed these viruses using AI models named Evo 1 and Evo 2.
The research team created new variants of the ΦX174 virus capable of attacking E. coli bacteria. Out of 285 viral genotypes generated by AI, 16 variants were able to successfully suppress the bacteria. Notably, these viruses demonstrated even better performance compared to naturally occurring viruses.
When the AI-designed viruses were combined, they proved effective at suppressing antibiotic-resistant E. coli strains. While this technology could become a promising solution in the future for treating diseases that are difficult to cure with antibiotics, researchers note that current testing remains at the laboratory stage. The research team emphasizes that further development and clinical trials are necessary before practical applications can be realized.
