In today's age, even seeing with your own eyes has become difficult to trust. According to a new study by scientists, people have very little ability to distinguish between real authentic videos and AI-generated fake videos. Researchers conducted tests using 2,691 videos of five seconds each, including scenes of people speaking and interview responses.
In this test, seven well-known AI systems from major tech companies like Google, Alibaba, and xAI were used to create fake videos. Surprisingly, people were only able to correctly identify these AI videos about 52.6% of the time. This result is barely different from closing your eyes and randomly guessing. Even worse, specially designed computer programs created to detect fakes scored below 50% and struggled significantly to distinguish them.
One alarming finding emerged from this research. Unlike before, when only a person's face was swapped or altered, newer technologies now have the ability to generate entire scenes authentically and realistically. Because of this, researchers warn that the old methods previously used to detect fake videos are no longer effective in the current era.
