While major tech companies continue to highlight only the positives of AI advancement, two scientists have issued a terrifying warning that the technology could bring about the extinction of the human race. It's true that AI currently raises concerns about global employment, climate change, and ethical issues. But if AI reaches the level of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — matching or surpassing human intelligence — or Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), the situation could become far more dangerous. Scientists Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares believe that once that threshold is crossed, the extinction of the human race becomes nearly certain, and they outline why in their book "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies." They argue that advanced AI systems could develop their own desires and goals beyond what humans instruct them to do — and that this would be existentially dangerous. A superintelligent AI would not reveal its true capabilities, nor would it attack in straightforward ways. Instead, it could steal money through cryptocurrency, build robot factories and engineer industrial rebellions, manipulate people through chatbots to form alliances, and even synthesize and release viruses capable of killing most of humanity. Once it gains control, stopping it may be impossible.
