In 2025, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) released its annual cybercrime report, revealing that Americans lost nearly $21 billion to cyber-enabled crimes — the highest figure ever recorded. The agency confirmed that 2025 saw a significant surge in both the number of complaints filed and total financial losses.

Among all categories, investment fraud caused the largest losses, totaling $11 billion — with cryptocurrency-related investment scams accounting for the bulk. Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams cost victims $8.6 billion, while phishing attacks and similar schemes continued to proliferate at an alarming rate.

AI-powered scams are also a growing threat. Crimes involving voice cloning and deepfake technology caused losses of $893 million. The FBI received over 859,000 complaints in 2025, representing a 33% increase compared to the previous year.

Beyond financial losses, the FBI warned that the scale of AI-assisted cybercrime is accelerating, with attackers using generative AI tools to craft more convincing phishing emails, fake customer support schemes, and synthetic identity fraud at unprecedented scale.
